A listing that says "wood" doesn't tell you which of three different constructions you're paying for. It could be a body carved from a single piece of solid wood, a thin real-wood veneer bonded over a plastic or composite core, or an injection-molded plastic shell printed with a wood-grain finish. All three can carry the word "wood" in a product title, and you can't reliably tell them apart from a listing photo alone.
This matters because the three constructions don't cost the same, don't weigh the same, and don't age the same way once your recipients start carrying them. Here's how to identify which one you're being offered, what to ask your supplier for in writing, what to check on a physical sample, and how to lock the confirmed answer into your purchasing spec so a later production run can't quietly swap it out on you.
Solid wood. The body is machined or carved from a single piece of timber, or from solid blocks joined together. Grain runs continuously through the piece, including on the edges, and if the drive has a drilled cavity for the USB circuit board, you'll see the same wood on the inside of that cavity as on the outside. Weight varies by species, but it's genuinely wood the whole way through.
Wood veneer. A thin layer of real wood, usually under a millimeter thick, is bonded over a substrate underneath. That substrate is commonly ABS plastic or a wood composite like MDF. The visible face shows real wood grain, but any cut edge, drilled hole, or seam reveals a line where the veneer meets a different material underneath. You're paying for the look and feel of real wood on the surface, with something else doing the structural work.
Wood-look plastic. The body is injection-molded plastic, usually ABS or PC, with a printed or textured finish designed to resemble wood grain. Because the pattern is printed rather than grown, it often repeats or mirrors across units in the same batch, something real wood grain never does. Edges show plastic parting lines from the mold rather than end grain.
Cost roughly follows the same order as the construction: solid wood costs the most, wood veneer sits in the middle, and wood-look plastic costs the least. The exact gap depends on species, order volume, and finish, so treat this as a ranking rather than a fixed number, but the ranking itself rarely flips. If a quote prices a "solid wood" USB drive close to what you'd expect for a plastic one, take that as a reason to verify the construction before you order, not as confirmation you found a good deal.

Moisture sensitivity. Solid wood can warp or crack with changes in humidity and temperature in a way that a veneer over a stable substrate, or a plastic body, generally doesn't. Hardness varies by species. Not all solid wood holds up the same way. Harder species resist dents and scratches better than softer ones, so ask which species you're getting, not just that the casing is solid wood.
Printing can behave differently on open grain. UV printing and some coatings adhere less evenly on a pronounced or open wood grain than on a smoother veneer or plastic surface. If your logo needs sharp, consistent color, ask your supplier how the print method performs on the specific species you're ordering, and check it on the physical sample rather than assuming it.
None of this makes solid wood the wrong choice. It means the premium you pay buys a look and feel, not automatic durability, so weigh these trade-offs against how the drives will actually be used and carried.
Before you accept a sample, ask your supplier to confirm the construction in writing, not verbally on a call. Specifically request:
Get this on record before you move to sampling. A construction diagram supplied after the fact is much harder to hold a supplier to than one you asked for upfront.
Photos aren't enough to settle this. A wood-grain print can look convincing at product-photo resolution. You need a physical sample in hand, and you need to check specific parts of it.
Start with the non-destructive checks. They settle the question in most cases without putting a mark on the sample:
